Of much more concern, rather than theoretical speculation, is the destruction of our waterways used for drinking, bathing, gardening, fishing and recreation. For years, it was believed the best way to dispose of unused pharmaceutical drugs was by flushing them down the toilet. The increased use of antibacterial soap flushes thousands of gallons of soapy medicated detergent into the sewage systems across the nation.
Our septic systems and sewage treatment systems are not equipped to remove all the medications, steroids, fertilizers and chemicals from personal care products that get washed into our waterways.
Scientists continue to find deformed aquatic life and search for ways to remediate the problem.
Hormone treatment products and birth control pills are thought to disrupt aquatic animals' hormone systems, which regulate certain cell or organ functions. Can you imagine what these substances are doing to human populations. Is there a connection with infertility rates? I don't know.
"The concentrations of PPCPs found in the USGS survey range from parts per trillion (ppt) to parts per billion (ppb), or nanograms per liter to micrograms per liter. For pharmaceuticals this is many orders of magnitude below the concentrations prescribed as medication. However, some PPCPs, such as musk fragrances, are fat soluble and so can bioaccumulate in animal tissue." Let's do something about a real problem in our environment.
